I first learned about Storyline Online as an elementary school media clerk. Although I do not recall the book being read aloud that day, I do remember how neat it was to see a famous person sharing a book with children online; what a great way for celebrities to positively leverage their influence by entertaining and educating the young. I immediately went home that day and added Storyline Online to my personal list of library resources.
According to Storyline Online's website, this award winning* literacy platform is created by the non-profit Screen Actor's Guild (SAG) Foundation/American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) and "streams videos featuring celebrated actors [such as Oprah Winfrey and Kevin Costner] reading children's books alongside creatively produced illustrations" (Storyline Online, n.d.).
While no recent posts have been added in over a year, the Storyline Online Blog features selected read alouds based on nationally recognized notable dates that can be used year after year, such as Betty White's video of Harry the Dirty Dog (below) for National Pet Day in April.

Hi Michelle!
ReplyDeleteI am so happy that you shared the resource of Storyline Online as we love it in our class as well! I originally found this resource when it was just getting going and there were only a few stories available. I was pleased to see it take off and more of the SGA (Screen Actor's Guild) get involved. I enjoy watching the stories to since they are read by some really neat celebrities. My favorite is "The Rainbow Fish" told by Ernest Borgnine.
Thank you again for sharing this resource!

Michelle,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this blog. It looks like there are some great resources to draw from here. I loved Angela Bassett reading of "Trombone Shorty" as well as Meryl Streep in the animated version of "Chrysanthemum." As far as I know these two are not on this blog, but they are both celebrity book sharing. Thanks again, I know I will want to look for more celebrity read alouds like these on Storyline Online.
Hey Michelle!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE Storyline Online!! I used it daily with my students last year and still use it when I sub a few days a week. The read alouds are fantastic and the storytellers have such great voices! The kids are drawn in! Thanks for sharing this blog and resource. I also highly recommend it!
Michelle, Thank you for sharing about Storyline Online! I used this resource last year in my drama class (my students had to reenact a storybook) but didn't realize there were accompanying teacher guides. Those will be fantastic to utilize as a librarian.
